Medication Management

When used appropriately and conservatively, medication management is an effective and important tool to treat chronic pain and improve your quality of life. Medication may be used alone or in conjunction with non-invasive treatments. Medicine management may include the following, but other medication(s) more specific to the type of pain you are experiencing may also be prescribed.

Pain medications

Opioid pain medicines are often used to treat acute pain or cancer pain. They are prescribed for chronic pain also in conjunction with other modalities of treatment or after other modalities have failed.

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are the most commonly used medications of this type. They can reduce swelling and irritation and relieve pain. Prescription NSAIDs are also available.

Anti-depressant drugs

Originally used only to treat depression, studies have shown that these medications can alleviate pain in certain situations. Furthermore, they may have the added benefit of helping the patient to sleep at night.

Anti-seizure medications

These medications may help relieve certain types of pain by reducing abnormal electrical discharges in damaged nerves.

Behavorial & mental health support

Chronic pain can lead to psychological effects such as depression, irritability, anxiety and anger. If left untreated, the physical and psychological effects of chronic pain can affect a person’s ability to return to work or enjoy leisure activities. To better serve our patients, we have a licensed Psychologist on staff who offers evaluation and treatment for the emotional toll associated with chronic pain.

Pain is a very personal experience, but also a very frustrating experience.

That’s where Spine & Pain Associates can help.

The first step to relieving your pain is obtaining the correct diagnosis. Our physicians are masterful diagnosticians who have undergone additional training in a variety of pain medicine fields.

Following diagnosis, our goal is to provide you with the best possible treatment options for your diagnosis with an individualized treatment plan.

Pain can be managed through both pain medicine therapies and interventional pain management treatments. Our physicians provide both therapies, focusing on interventional pain management treatments that actively and aggressively treat the illnesses, conditions or injuries that cause pain and limit function.

The advantage of interventional pain management is that it encompasses the full spectrum of care from the initial diagnosis to a personalized treatment plan and ongoing pain relief programs. Interventional pain management helps you avoid surgery and reduces reliance on medication management, all while improving your quality of life
